Dulce María Loynaz: “Hidden Water”

Hidden Water

You are the hidden water
flowing deep within a rock:
You are dark, sweet water
running underneath this earth,
heedless of the sun
or the thirst of those
who pick at the earth
or drag their wheels along.
You are virgin water
without destiny or location;
you are the untouched freshness,
the secret, trembling freshness,
the secret joy of this
freshness that is mine,
of the deep water you have always been,
never asking to be more emptiness than this:
black water, nameless,
pressing tight and tight against me.
