Rainer Maria Rilke: “We Struggle and Flail” (from Sonnets to Orpheus, I:22)

We Struggle and Flail (from Sonnets to Orpheus, I:22)

We struggle and flail
But our daily endeavor
Is just a narrow detail
In the span of forever.

All our swift boldness
Will soon be undone,
And only in slowness
Is our real work begun.

So you must learn not to test
The speed of your flight
Nor the height of your power.

For all things are at rest:
The darkness and the light,
The book and the flower.

Rainer Maria Rilke
