Ingeborg Bachmann: “Stay”

Stay

The winds sleep in their yards.
We’ve reached our native lands.
A fragile house of cards
now falls into your hands.

The cards are illustrated
with places each one records,
a whole world you’ve collated,
and shuffled up with words.

But stay in the game, my love,
the deepest that ever has been.
For the card you grab hold of
is the only card you can win.
