Antonio Machado: “From the Threshold of a Dream”

From the Threshold of a Dream

From the threshold
of a dream,
they called to me.
It was a good voice,
filled with tenderness:

“Will you come see
the soul with me?”
And in my heart
I felt a caress:

“I am always with you.”
And so we set out
across an empty room
that had no end.

I felt the touch
of her perfect dress
and the softest pulse
of her helping hand.
