Rubén Darío: “In the Country of Allegories”

In the Country of Allegories

In the country of allegories
Salome is always dancing
for crowned King Herod,
forever more,
and the head of John the Baptist,
before whom lions tremble
is cut off with an ax.
Blood rains down.

Just so, the sexual rose
unfolds until it’s halfway open,
stirring all things with strange emotion,
with its fleshly stigma
and spiritual enigma.
