Jacques Prévert: “Young People In Love”

Young People In Love

Young people in love embrace standing up
Leaning against the gates of the night
And those who pass by point fingers at them
But young people in love
Aren’t there for anyone
And it is only their shadows
That tremble in the night
Sparking the rage of the passers who pass
Their rage, their contempt, their laughter, their envy
But young people in love are not there for anyone
They are somewhere else, higher, perhaps, than the day
And further away than even the night
In the clarity of their first love’s dizzying light.
