César Vallejo: “The Eternal Wedding Bed”

The Eternal Wedding Bed

Love is strong only when it must die!
And the tomb will be an enormous eye
in whose depths the agony of love lives on,
enduring and weeping, as in a cup
of sweet eternity and the blackest dawn.

All lips will curl to quench their desires
like a thing that overflows and expires;
and in this union formed from strife
each mouth will give every other mouth
the life within this painful life.

And when I think this way, sweet is the grave
where all souls join in a single wave
and there rises a roar that all are part of.
Sweet is the shadow where lovers meet
in a universal tryst of love.

César Vallejo
