Nizar Qabbani: “I Taught the Children of the World”

I Taught the Children of the World

I taught the children of the world
how to spell your name
and their lips became mulberry trees.
I commanded the wind
to comb through your dark hair
but it apologized,
saying its time is so short
and your hair is so long.

Nizar Qabbani
