Rainer Maria Rilke: “God Speaks to Us Each”

God Speaks to Us Each

God speaks to us each, before we are born.
He walks us in silence through darkness into form.
And he gives us these words, before we exist,
words hidden in mist:

“Go from your sense-doors, out and higher
to the precipice of your heart’s desire.
The things of this world rise up like a fire,
and behind them, a shadow grows.
Let that shadow be the clothes
you use to cover my nakedness with.

“Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror.
Keep moving, no feeling is a final conclusion.
Stay close to my side.
Near here is the land
they call ‘being alive.’
You’ll know when you arrive
by its absence of illusion.

“Come, give me your hand.”

Rainer Maria Rilke
