Paul Eluard: “Obsession”

Obsession

After years of wisdom
When the world seemed obvious as a needle
Was it really whispering about something else?
After fighting for favors and squandering treasures,
Was it nothing more than a red lip with a red tip?
Nothing more than a white leg with a white foot?
And where do we think we are now?

— Paul Eluard (tr. from French by Paul Weinfield, c2013)
